Logline

Being married at an early age prevented Insan and Mita from getting their marriage legally acknowledged, which they did in order to get an identity and education for their son, Afif.

SYNOPSIS

Having been married for almost five years, Insan and Mita ran into a problem as their son Afif was about to enter elementary school. Their marriage, which had not been legally recognized due to Insan’s age, prevented them from obtaining an identity card for Afif. The complicated bureaucratic hurdles did not stop them from getting their marriage recognized. Insan and Mita are committed to getting their marriage recognized for Afif’s future, even if it means that they have to remarry. They’ll do whatever it takes to get Afif a good education.

Director's Statement

I know the couple Insan and Mita quite well because Insan is my youngest brother. I had met his wife several times when they were still dating. Insan works as a fisherman, where he spends a lot of time at sea compared to his wife and children. This meant that Mita had more interaction with her son. Mita, who is still relatively young, also struggles to deal with her son, who is sometimes cranky.

Beyond the reason for their marriage, I was impressed by this couple and realised that their struggle to become parents and always want to give the best for their son is something that I think is very remarkable. Because they got married at such a young age, their marriage could not be legally validated. So, they are only married by religion. The status of their child has not been legally recognised by the country. Until now, they don’t have a marriage certificate and their son can’t have a birth certificate either. Of course, this is an issue for their son to enrol in school. They are both still trying to get their marriage and son to be legally recognised, which is hindered by the bureaucratic complexities they don’t understand.

Their struggle to become parents and to get their marriage and son legal status can serve as a good example for other young couples who may have the same situation. However, on the other hand, it also serves as an insight for people who are thinking of getting married at an early age that they should be prepared to face challenges when they start a family.
