Maesaroh (38), a fisherwoman, repairing a broken boat engine with the help of her husband and son so that it can be used to harvest green mussels at the Nusantara cooperative platforms in Tambakrejo village.

SYNOPSIS

Indonesia’s vast marine territory is at odds with the poor lives of the fishing community. Technological limitations, such as small boats that cannot reach farther into the ocean, are one of the initial triggers of poverty. This problem is faced by Maesaroh, a fisherwoman in Tambakrejo Fishing Village, Semarang. She needs to repair her boat to be able to harvest green mussels as a reliable marine product. Moreover, the fish in the estuary has been decreasing after the construction of the sea wall toll road in Semarang. However, at the moment, the boat’s engine needs to be repaired and regulations from the fish aggregating manager regarding her husband’s inability to swim prevent her from harvesting and processing green mussels. Maesaroh needs to be resourceful to keep fighting for her life.

Director's Statement

In line with the protagonist of this story, I believe that every human being in this world has the right to live and grow that should not be taken away by anyone and anything. Through this film, I hope that socio-economic growth in Indonesia can be equitably distributed so that no more children need to drop out of school, watch their homes being demolished, and be haunted by the threat of not being able to live in peace.
